GS1 Application Identifiers (GS1 AIs)
GS1 Application Identifiers(GS1 AIs) act like a code list of generic and simple data fields for use in multi-sector and international supply chain application. Each GS1 AI consists of two or more digits and provides the definition and structure of the data field encoded in a GS1 DataCarrier. The data structure is either numeric or alpha-numeric and of fixed or variable length. AIs are finite set of defined identifiers used to connect physical and logical things to information or business messages related to them. A GS1 Application Identifier (GS1 AI) exists for each GS1 Identification (ID) Key, allowing it to be encoded in GS1 BarCodes or EPC/RFIC tags. The GS1 AIs associated with the differed GS1 ID Keys are as follows:

Supplementary data is often associated with a GS1 ID Key in particular GTINs, for example, expiration dates, batch or lot numbers and serial numbers. The Data Structure for dates is a fixed field of 6 numerals – the first two represent the year, the middle 2 the month and the last two the day. For example the day July 26, 2011 is encoded as 110726. The data Structure for both Batch or Lot Number and Serial Number is a variable field consisting of no more than 20 numeric or alpha-numeric numbers.
Besides the use of GS1 AI (414) with the GLN to identify physical locations, other GS1 AIs can to used with the GLN to identify a party. The following table provides the use of GS1 AIs with a GLN and their definition
GS1 AIs present a standardized way to encode information in a single GS1 DataCarrier. |
