Global companies from the phramaceutical and medical device industry approached GS1 to help set gobal healthcare industry standards. This resulted in that in May 2005, the Global Healthcare User Group (HUG) was formed to lead the healthcare industry to the effective utilization and development of global standards with primary focus on automatic identification to ensure patient safety. The goal of the Global Healthcare User Group is to be the recognized, open and neutral source for regulatory agencies, trade organizations and other similar stakeholders who are seeking input and direction for global standards in healthcare for patient safety, supply chain security & efficiency, traceability and accurate data synchronization.

 

GS1 HUG is a voluntary, global Healthcare user group bringing together all related Healthcare stakeholders: pharmaceutical and medical devices manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors, group purchasing organizations, hospitals, pharmacies, logistics providers, governmental and regulatory bodies, and associations.

 

The mission of GS1 Healthcare is to lead the Healthcare sector to the successful development and implementation of by bringing together experts in healthcare to enhance and supply chain efficiencies. The enhance of patient safety means the assurance of the– the right patient, right medication/product, right dosage, right route of administration and right time


Local Healthcare user groups have also been established in a number of countries around the world. These groups are facilitated by GS1 Member Organizations and ensure that specific local requirements are taken into account in global standards development and promote and support local adoption and implementation of such standards.

 

A number of regulatory authorities and other organizations have endorsed the GS1 System of Standards and recommend its implementation in the healthcare sector.
